Please excuse my lack of post last night; my brain just was NOT with it yesterday! At first, I thought I was just exhausted from running so far, but then I realized I hadn’t had any coffee!
This morning when I woke up, I had a bit of a brain scorching headache going on. (Dependent much?) What’s even worse? I was completely out of coffee! The horror! I made a quick trip up to the store and am happy to inform you that I now have this by my side.
So even though I was half dead yesterday, I managed to have a pretty great day! I met Bryce up at Finn McCool’s so we could watch some horse races and make some bets!
But first, fuel for betting! I went for a Turkey Reuben with sauerkraut and a side of fries. And nearly an entire bottle of ketchup (unpictured) because fries are basically just a vehicle for me to get ketchup into my mouth. I love me some ketchup. OK, I’ll stop now. Sorry I’m so weird!
Even though I was completely stuffed by the end, I demolished the whole plate! At that point, I still hadn’t realized the coffee connection and thought I just needed to eat! I also partook in one of Bryce’s Irish Egg Rolls. It was basically corned beef and cabbage in an egg roll with chipotle mayo on the side.
Healthy? No. Tasty? YES.
While we ate, we watched a few races and read the stats about the horses. Bryce explained to me how to read the sheet because I really had no clue what any of the info meant! He also schooled me on the various types of bets you can make. I think I understand what they are, but I’m not sure I could explain it to someone else, so I won’t even attempt it!
Finn McCool’s has it set up so you can place your off-track bets right there on a little machine that looks like an ATM. (I didn’t take a photo because some of the guys there betting are super serious, and I’m pretty sure they were already annoyed with me!). You just look at the odds and the horses, and make your picks!
We placed our bets, but had to leave before the Preakness started to go get Danielle from the airport. On the way back, we listened to the race on the radio.
Guess whose horse won?!?!?!
Wheeeeee!!!! Beginner’s luck, what?!? Beyond exciting, I tell ya! And you know what’s even more exciting? When your dinky little $5 turns into this!
Winning! So fun!
Now I guess I have to bet on the Belmont, which is the third race in the triple crown! I’m not much of a gambler—I usually look at it as throwing away my money—but once in a while, it’s fun!
We celebrated at California Pizza Kitchen, where I was still full from my Reuben, but I had a little Cobb Salad that Danielle shared with me.
Romaine, grilled chicken, avocado, tomatoes, bacon, hard boiled egg, blue cheese, and candied walnuts with balsamic vinaigrette. It was really good. Danielle swapped out the usual ranch dressing and had them add the candied walnuts on the side. She is a genius! I could have eaten an entire bowl of just those walnuts! But they were a great salad topper!
I also got a Tuscan Panzanella Salad from their “Small Cravings” menu—basically just scaled down appetizers and salads.
Cannellini beans, cherry and yellow grape tomatoes, toasted croutons, red onion, cucumber, beets, fresh avocado and basil tossed in red wine herb vinaigrette. Oh, and I threw a few extra candied walnuts on top! I loved the basil on this (big surprise), and will definitely be recreating this at home! It was so fresh and light!
It was a really fun day despite the fact that I was in a caffeine-withdrawal stupor for
all most of it! It’s supposed to be gorgeous here today, so I’ve got my eye on some pool time and maybe a trip to Dick’s for some new running gear! Those racetrack earnings are burning a hole in my pocket!
Have a great little Sunday!
Have you ever bet on the horses? How’d it go?
