Forgive me for my lack of blog last night. I was busy getting drunk with my mom.
My dad had a last minute dinner meeting, so Mom and I decided to have an impromptu girls’ night! We checked out another condo for me (too small—TWSS ), did a little shopping at TJ Maxx where we both coveted purses that were still too expensive, and grabbed dinner at The Quarter Bistro!
Any place that has a giant bulb of garlic hanging over the entrance is OK by me!
Of course, we had to start with wine because that’s how we do.
A word about wine. My parents have totally ruined my palette. Well, not ruined, but let’s just say my taste in wine exceeds my budget. They go to Napa Valley every summer and bring back amazing cabernet, so I was pretty much raised on really good red wine. This makes it difficult to A: purchase wine to have at home that won’t put me in the poorhouse, and B: find wine on a restaurant menu that isn’t outrageously expensive, but that I’ll actually enjoy. (First world problem).
Anyway, Mom’s trick is to find a winemaker she likes and order their merlot instead of the cab. It’s usually pretty tasty, but much less expensive. Smart!
Hummus and hot bread to start.
Please excuse the photos—the lighting at the Quarter Bistro is great for ambience, but horrible for photos.
Mom had a giant bowl of shrimp and scallop pasta in white wine sauce with garlic and mushrooms. Holy yum!
And I went for a Bourbon Louis salad with hard boiled eggs, cucumbers, tomatoes, avocado, shrimp, and lump crab meat.
I scarfed it! The Louis dressing was kind of Thousand Island-y, so I had it on the side and it was perfect—sweet and tangy!
We had a lot of fun chatting away. Since Mom is a teacher, I gave her all of my classroom stuff, and she’s actually using a lot of it! Such a compliment to me that my mom, who is a master teacher, can use some of the materials I was using.
And don’t worry, we didn’t drink that whole bottle of wine . . .
We took it to go. And yes, this is legal, so don’t get all crazy on me.
Ahhhh good times. Makes me glad to be back in Michigan. We’re going to have to do this a lot when the temperatures are sub-zero, and I’m wondering why the hell I moved back here.
This morning I slept in a little (perk of working from home!), and then hit the treadmill for a tempo run.
Remember this treadmill
Yeah. So the tempo run. I give it about a 2 out of 10. Sucked. Hard.
In the spirit of Rachael . . .
What I was supposed to be doing:
Tempo Run Distance: 7 miles, including warm up & cool down; 5 miles @ 8:38
What I actually did:
Tempo Run Distance: 7 miles, including warm up & cool down; 5 miles @8:45-9:15 with 1-2 minute walk breaks every mile or so.
No, every run isn’t going to be fantastic. Sometimes it’s really hard and it just plain sucks. That was today. But I did it. There are several excuses I could make, or several ways I could go easy on myself, but I’ve decided not to meditate on it and just move on.
When you have a bad workout, do you beat yourself up over it or just let it go?
Do you like wine??? What kind? If not, what do you like to drink? Rum? Beer? Water???
