The Only Thing That Got Me Out of Bed

I cannot tell a lie: the only thing that got me out of bed this morning for my run was my new Under Armour thermal compression top. It’s a mock turtleneck that’s extra long so it goes over my butt and keeps me super warm.

{Why does having your butt covered keep you warmer??? Has anyone else noticed this??}

Like this, but in bright blue. I also had to rock gloves this morning. Not thrilled about that, but the run was pretty good, so I suppose I can’t complain. I also wore my new Road ID!

In case you’ve been living under a rock and don’t know about Road ID, it’s basically just an ID bracelet that you wear while you’re working out just in case something happens to you. It has your name, age and important contact info on it. I’ve been meaning to get one forever, especially since I’m a single lady. Finally rectified that!

The Road ID guys also sent me a coupon code for $1 off in the next 30 days. If you’re interested, just go to the Road ID site and use coupon code ThanksMelissa9089592. I got the Road ID Slim, and it’s comfy. I don’t even notice it while I’m running which is key for me. I’m weird about anything on my person when I run. As my dad used to say, I’m a physical girl in a physical world. Smile

You and me, Olivia. You and me.

Back to the running.

I’m trying to make myself go a little easier on my runs so I don’t overdo it before my race in November. It’s still about 3 1/2 weeks out, so I need to be careful, especially given the aches and pains I’ve had recently. Trying to avoid the whole wheelchair by the age of 40 thing.

Guess what else I’ve been doing?

Yep! I’ve been strength training! Please feel free to tell me how proud you are. I need lots of encouragement!

It hasn’t been that bad, but I still don’t love it. I know I probably need more, but I’m trying for twice a week and doing yoga, too. I actually think the yoga is just as hard in terms of working my muscles, but I get to stretch, too, which I do like, so it all works out.

Here’s what this week looks like:

Sunday: Jackie Warner Power Circuit Training (total body weights)

Monday: 6 mile run @9:02 pace (oops!) & Bethenny yoga

Tuesday: 5 mile run @9:24 pace (a little better . . . )

Wednesday: Mile repeats Sad smile I will do this, just not excited about it. Weight training class with Steph (I have no clue what this will be like, but I’ll let you know!)

Thursday: Easy 5 mile run

Friday: Bethenny yoga

Saturday: 14 mile run

It seems like a lot, but I don’t look at yoga as a workout at all, so I’m getting some good stretching in before my long run on Saturday.

Since it was an unacceptably cold 34* this morning, I needed a hot breakfast when I got home. Pumpkin Pie oats seemed like the right thing to do. I made them with the same base as all of my oatmeal, adding in pumpkin, pumpkin pie spice and maple syrup. They were creamy and satisfying!

005

And oh-so-seasonal.

Pumpkin Pie Oats

Serves 1

1/4 cup old fashioned oatmeal

1/2 cup coconut milk

1/4 cup canned pumpkin

1/4 t. pumpkin pie spice

2 T. sugar free maple syrup

1/2 T. walnuts

Heat the milk, pumpkin, spice and syrup until boiling, then stir in oats. Simmer over low heat about 7-8 minutes, until liquid is absorbed and oats get thick. Top with walnuts. Then take a bunch of pictures of your oats.

003

OK, you can skip the last step lest your oats get cold. We can’t have that happening now, can we?

007

I feel like Martha photo-ing (Yes, I say photo-ing. Often, in fact.) my seasonal oats on my seasonal placemat. I am so freaking domestic.

Oh, and I am clean! And dressed! In pants with a waistband! (<—Yes, all of that is exclamation point worthy Smile)

Completely unrelated, I am now a PC, but am considering getting a Mac. Any thoughts on this???

  1. 🙂 oh Jackie. I just love to hate her. She’s just so brutal! Welcome back to strength training friend – I read that 2 days a week while you’re in running-training mode is all you need, so I think you’re fine and I totally agree that yoga works your muscles just as much. keep it up!!

    • Thank you! I was thinking I need you to send me a scary face encouraging picture to make me do the training. Then I can have you staring me down so I get my butt in gear!

  2. Nice job on the strength training! I haven’t tried pumpkin in my oats yet but fully intend to. Yum! You’re so cute you cook your oats on that thing. What’s it called? Sto… I can’t remember. I can only recall the word “microwave.”

  3. Strength training is my new favorite, but that is only because I just can’t seem to “like” running. For me, the best part of running is when its over – I love that runner’s high.

Sorry I’ve been MIA on your blog comments lately – can’t seem to find time to do anything but eat, sleep and work… but its fun to catch up! Your new place looks fabulous – how exciting!

  4. Mmm love the pumpkin oats time of year 🙂 Pumpkin anything, really! Great job on the strength training and all that running — you’re amazing! As for yoga, I’ve found that some yoga classes are significantly more challenging than others — it all depends on the type of yoga and how much you put into it. I do a hatha/vinyasa class that is more challenging (to me) than body pump — and I’m seeing bigger strength/toning gains from yoga than BP. Everyone’s body responds differently, but I do love my yoga lately. 🙂 Plus, it works out the mind AND body!

Oh, and I love love love my mac. Was a PC until last year when I made the switch and haven’t looked back since. Highly recommend the MacBook Air. Lurv it. 🙂

  5. Jackie Warner looks mean! Like she scares me. Maybe that would motivate me to get back into strength training.
How do you like Bethenny yoga?
It’s getting cold here too in NY. Bah.

    • She is scary, but the workout is actually manageable (but I am wimpy with my 3 lb weights!)

I LOVE LOVE LOVE Bethenny’s yoga DVD. Highly recommend it! I ordered it on Amazon so I have the DVD and I can also get it on Amazon’s OnDemand. I do it at least twice a week.

  6. Great job on the strength training! That is inspiring to me because I totally suck at hitting the weights these days. Heading out for a run is just so much easier – less thought.

And I’ll give you a big, fat YES to a Mac. I got one three years ago and will never go back to PC. Macs are so worth the extra cash: no virus problems, easy to setup!

    • We should find a weights class to do together! Maybe there’s something in Plymouth? Of course, you might want to wait until your little bean arrives, but we should do it! I need a buddy!

Looks like I’m going to join the Mac club. Did you go to the Apple store or order it online?

  7. Great job on the strength training (you may give yourself a little pat on the back right now if you’d like)! Jackie is TOUGH. I watched her show while it was on Bravo, and I’m fairly certain I would collapse in a heap very quickly if she was training me! Keep it up!
