Seems to be a Lemon

Long time no see! Phew–life suddenly got busy! It’s not looking like it’ll be slowing down anytime soon, but I’m still feeling refreshed from some time off around the holidays, so I’m not stressing out–yet. I’m sure it will come. πŸ˜‰ At least we made some time for fun on this trip!

A cocktail (or 3! Whoops!) after work makes everything better!

So! I survived my first week of marathon training! My long run yesterday had a few hiccups, but nothing too out of control. My Garmin seems to be a lemon, which was the most annoying part of the whole thing, because I’m really anxious to use it! When I got home from DC, I noticed that the display was really hard to see. Unless I held it right under the light, I could hardly see it at all!

I decided to try running with it anyway, but the GPS never started. Obviously, I’ve been running without a Garmin for my entire running career, so this isn’t the end of the world, but I really just want my new toy to work! I looked around online for solutions, but couldn’t find anything that seemed to fit my problem, so I think I’ll send it back and try to get another one.

The other issue?

Sore knees

Jerks. Yeah, those stupid knees got pretty sore in the last 5 miles of my 15. Nothing I couldn’t live with, but not the most comfortable, either. The bigger issue is that while my knees typically just hurt while I’m running and then feel OK when I stop, now they haven’t stopped hurting since yesterday’s run. I know. I’ve been icing and took a lot of time stretching and doing some yoga today, so I’m hoping that will help. Sara also sent me a link to some strengthening exercises, so I think I’ll give those a shot, too.

Other than those 2 minor annoyances, it was a great run! The weather was unseasonably warm and sunny–it felt like spring!–so I tried to soak it up and enjoy it while I could. I’m sure we’ll be back to frigid grey-ness this week. 😦 The good news is that I’m going to Florida at the end of the month to visit my grandparents, so I’ll get my dose of sunshine again soon enough!

I spent the rest of Saturday doing a little shopping/exchanging at the mall before meeting my friend Kim to hear a band and have some good girly time. See how we adore each other?

We drank and danced the night away, and while I may have had a teeny hangover this morning, it was totally worth it!

Naturally, hangovers require carbs, so after guzzling a ton of water and punishing myself with taking down all my Christmas decorations (finally), I baked up a loaf ofΒ Brown Butter Whole Wheat Soda Bread.

That Jessica is pretty much a genius. This bread is chewy and dense and full of garlic and herbs.

But what’s even better is that it takes minutes to put together, doesn’t require any yeast, and is essentially knead-free! You could totally make it in the middle of the week. From start to finish–including cooling time–this took about 90 minutes. And only 15 of those minutes require you to actually do anything.

The recipe makes 2 small loaves, and I’m sure I’ll finish them up without a problem. πŸ˜‰

So that’s where I’m at!

For all the Garmin folks out there–

Any ideas about how to fix mine? Did I get a lemon???

  1. I won’t talk about the Garmin, because you know I already think it’s a lemon in other ways. Is that 15 miles a personal distance record for you? Your body may just be adjusting to the distance. Keep icing like you are even if it doesn’t hurt anymore and it will help. And I’m surprised you’re already doing 15 miles during your first week of marathon training. But maybe that’s because my training lasted 80 years and we went up so gradually I wanted to poke my eyes out.

    • Good call on the icing. They’re feeling better this morning, but I’ll ice today anyway. I think it was a personal distance record, come to think of it! Yeah, I was actually supposed to do 14, but whatever. The plan is about 3 months long, so maybe that’s why? I do 16 next weekend, then randomly only 7, then up to 18 the following weekend. My friend who is a certified running coach looked at it and said it was ok, so I’ll take her word for it!

      • Yeah smart coach cuts back on mileage every 3 weeks, which is good because it gives you a chance to recover – physically AND mentally! πŸ™‚ But I also think they ramp up mileage too early, but since you’re only doing 3 months maybe it wont matter? How many 20 milers does it have you running?

  2. Ooo man I’m so sorry about your knees! My knees don’t agree with running sometimes and it sucks. But I have definitely heard that strengthening the muscles around the knee can really help! Looks like you had a great night out with your friends :). Have a good Monday pretty lady!

  3. Sorry to hear about your Garmin. I would definitely send it back. Let me know how the exercises work for you. I can send you some more. Have a great day Melissa!

  4. Knees can be so tough! I used to have major knee problems, but stretching and being careful of my mileage build-up (10% or less per week) have kept me pain-free. I’m sure your body is just adjusting to the longer runs. BUT, if the pain continues, you might want to consider a chiropracter. I know it sounds counter-intuitive, but I was having foot/ankle issues last year which were magically cured by some chiropracter adjustments! Just throwing it out there! Happy training this week πŸ™‚

    • That’s actually a really good idea. I used to go to a chiropractor and my hip problems pretty much disappeared after that! I may have to look into that πŸ™‚

  5. BE CAREFUL with those knees girl! That bread looks delicious and the evening out loooked fun…hangover seemed worth it! πŸ™‚

Heading over to check out those streghtening exercises now…thanks for the link.
    xoxo from Trinidad

  6. OOH man I’m sorry to hear about your knees. I bet they’ll be better asap though, they probably just weren’t super excited about the long distance.

Maybe rest an extra day or two? That always helps me if I feel like there’s a bad body feeling coming on…
